Parent/Child Dedication
The act of dedicating children to the Lord was a common practice of blessing among the people of God in both the Old and New Testament periods. In addition, it was also a statement of recognition on the part of the parents that their child really belonged to God. As Christians today, we dedicate children with the same purpose in mind.
The dedication of a child is a public expression of faith and commitment on the part of the parents. This act by the parents is a prayerful declaration of their stewardship over God’s gracious gift to them. It is also their pledge to do all they can, as God gives them wisdom, to raise their child to respect and honor God and to love and serve Jesus Christ.
“As surely as you live, my Lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.”
1 Samuel 1:26-28
