STUDY:

Truth for Today: Jesus Sustains Everything

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” ‭‭(Hebrews‬ ‭1:3‬)

Do you wonder, especially right now, who is holding everything together and keeping everything going? Hebrews 1:3 gives us the astounding, soul-strengthening answer: It is Jesus. Let’s break this verse down.

God the Son is “the radiance of the glory of God”.  “Radiance” refers to emitting brightness, the Shekinah glory of God radiated from Him. Not a reflection of glory, the actual glory. He is the source. “Glory” is the brilliant radiance from God. The outflow of His being. “God” refers to His absolute, timeless existence. “Exact imprint” means an impression or stamp, refers to engraving a character or mark made by a die or seal. This indicates the characteristic trait or distinctive mark of God.

All that to say, Jesus Christ is God Almighty. Then, we see “He upholds the universe by the word of his power.” Focus with me on that idea.

Jesus upholds the universe. He holds every molecule, atom, and element together.‬‬ “Upholds” means to carry. The Son’s work of upholding involves not only support, but also movement. He carries all things forward on their appointed course. Jesus is not just holding everything up, being all-powerful, but He keeps everything moving along, being all-knowing and all-present. This points to His pervasive, precise, providential orchestration of all things as our sovereign God.

All of this is of immense comfort in these moments of uncertainty, fear, and anxiety. This is truth to calm all fears. This is comforting strength for you as you trust Christ’s all-sufficient sacrifice for sin and humbly yield yourself to Him.

THINK: What does this passage declare about God? What are God’s people being called to do? What assurance is given? How does Jesus and the Gospel transform present, and future, situations?

PRAY:‬‬ Pray these verses to God as a prayer. Pour out your heart in praise to God. Pray for others. Present needs to Him.
