GRACE CHURCH FAMILY,

During these interesting times, we have some exciting things going on. We want you to share in the excitement and join in as we seek to redeem the time for Jesus and the Gospel! Everything we do will be aimed at helping believers grow and reaching non-believers with the Gospel. Be praying for God’s will to be done.

EASTER WEEK!
We have some great things planned. Besides our Sunday morning livestream on Palm Sunday and Easter, we will also have a special Easter week lunchtime worship and a Bible reading plan.

Palm Sunday, livestream at 9:45 AM
“Save Us, Lord, We Pray” (John 12:12-19). How people want Jesus to rescue them but don't want Him to lead their life. We will run through events all the way to the cross at the end of chapter 19.

Easter Sunday, livestream at 9:45 AM
"Risen Savior: Seeing is Believing” (John 20:1-10). We will run through the whole resurrection scene, all the way to verse 29. How those who have not seen Christ yet have believed are blessed.

Easter Week Lunchtime Worship, April 6-10, 12:30-1:00 PM
The Cross of Christ: Why Jesus had to Die, Why the Cross Offends, How the Cross brings Peace, The Power of the Cross, The Victory of the Cross. There will be a song, prayer, Scripture reading, 15 minutes of preaching, another song. Done in 30 minutes. Invite people to tune in to this 30 minute livestream lunch time worship.

Easter Week 5-Day Bible Plan
The daily readings will tie in with the topic of the daily Lunchtime Worship.

SHARE YOUR STORY!
Bless others by sharing how God is working in your life by finding ways to help people. How is God leading you to share the gospel and help others during this time? What ideas do you have? What has God already done? Go for it and then share your story. Share your videos with us here

Video Stories: Send us a 3-min or less video of how you are redeeming the time for Jesus and the Gospel. See the link above for Steve Newcomb’s story.

Video Testimonies: “How Jesus changed my life.” We encourage you to share a video testimony on your own social media platform sharing your testimony of how Jesus changed your life. Use the hashtag #JesusChangedMyLife

Social Distancing Pics: Send us a picture of your household during Sunday livestream or your virtual Bible Class, Home Group, or Small Group.

There’s a lot to pray about right now Grace of Orange! There’s a lot of Gospel work to do. So many opportunities right now. God exists, God is alive, and He is engaged in drawing many people to Himself, reconciling people through faith in Christ!

In a time when so many of us are struggling with separation from family and friends and asking real questions like “What’s going to happen to me?” and “Where is God?”, it is so comforting to know we have the Gospel answers in the Bible!

Praise God for His indescribable gift!

Grace and Mercy,

Mike

A NOTE FROM PASTOR MIKE: 7 STEPS TO A HEALTHY HEART AND HOME

Grace Church Family,

These trying times can really test our patience, can’t they? I know tensions are running high in many households right now. Ours definitely has been stretched more than usual, and it is tempting to be more critical and less patient. It’s a real battle when nerves are on edge.

That’s just real life. We need to acknowledge it. If you came to the Sciarra household today, you wouldn’t see a perfect picture. You never will. You would see our real life. I want to talk with you about that for a few moments. Real life in your heart and home.

What can you do when tensions run high during these trying times?

Here is some help that hopefully I can take and apply myself and you can take and apply in your heart and home as well.

7 Steps to a Healthier Heart and Home:

  1. Acknowledge God and the Gospel. 2 Tim. 2:8 “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead.” Remember the Gospel message and that God is sovereign and in control. He knows everything. Acknowledge you need His help. He wants you to be at peace.
  2. Admit your sin to God. 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins God is faithful and just and will forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” God is so gracious and merciful to us. He forgives us when we confess our sins.
  3. Accept God’s forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 and Rom. 8:1. Remember that “there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” God is great and good and abundantly forgives when our hearts are tender and we admit our need.
  4. Admit your sin to your loved ones. James 4:16, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another. “ It is not easy to humble yourself, especially when you think you are right. But it is the best thing to do. By the way, “I love you and I am sorry” goes a long way.
  5. Acknowledge your forgiveness of others. Eph. 4:32, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” It is important for us to reconcile and restore right relationships with loved ones
  6. Aim at building others up. Eph. 4:29, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouth, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, but it may give grace to those who hear.” When you seek to build up its hard to tear down!
  7. Attend to the needs of others. Phil. 2:3-4, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interest, but also to the interests of others.” God sweetly changes your heart as you consider how to help and bless others vs. thinking of yourself.

I think these are all things we would do well to practice during this time. Especially in closer quarters and seeing members of our household more than usual. So, when tempers flare or tensions run high, take a moment and think through some of these things before you respond. That’s really the key. Don’t respond right away! Think it through. Be patient. Trust Jesus. Aim to honor Him and bless others in everything.

One more very important thing you can do: Take a chapter of the Bible like Romans 12, Ephesians 4, or Philippians 2, and read it over and over again, asking God to change your heart and renew your mind. The Word does it work in those who believe (1 Thess. 2:13)!

I love you and I am praying for you Grace Church.

Grace and Peace,

Mike

March 31, 2020

Grace Church Family,

Fears and anxieties sometimes loom larger than life, and big news travels fast. Social distancing extended for another month. For some this comes as no surprise, for others it increases worry. Needless to say, this is a very real crisis and I think it has everyone’s attention now.

I want to speak to worried, fearful, anxious hearts, but before I do so… as I mentioned Sunday, we are not doing what we want right now, we are doing what we can. We want to be the best citizens of our earthly cities. We want to show the love of Christ to as many people as we can. Not meeting in person as a church sure has its limitations, yet it is very encouraging to me to see how hard people are working to connect with one another in the most appropriate ways that they can right now. Thank you Grace Church for your excellence in loving one another and reaching out to unbelievers.

Now, I just want to speak to you all, especially if you are anxious, fearful, or worried. It is well with our souls because of Jesus Christ crucified, risen, returning, and reigning forever. Our hope is not in this world. This is now the time for us to put that truth into practice even more. Even a simple prayer like “Jesus I am afraid, please help me”, is effective. God knows your heart. He knows your need. You can cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

Beloved, know that this is real. You can count on the Triune God to be by your side. Christ in you the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). Never will He leave you, never will He forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). He is with us (Ps. 46:7, 11; Matthew 28:20.). These are sure and certain promises. You have God’s Word on it.

In the coming days we will talk about Christ’s work, our security in Christ, and the present and eternal assurance that God gives to us.

I love you Grace Church and I am so thankful for you.

Mike

March 30, 2020

Grace Church Family,

These are certainly trying and tumultuous times. And God’s blessings are all over it. So many opportunities for Gospel ministry. And yet, it’s a struggle. As I mentioned in my sermon yesterday, it is kind of easy to waste a day right now. Let’s redeem this time and wring it dry of every chance to show Christ’s love! What a great moment to bless, help, and care for others near and far.

For those of you joining us for livestream worship services, and there have sure been a lot, each week has had over 1600 total views. By Sunday afternoon we are usually over the 700 mark. Our reach is certainly extending beyond our walls. I am praying that many come to faith in Christ and grow in Him as a result. Also, the livestream is available to watch all week long, so you can point people to it. Much like watching our video sermons. Now it’s up as of Sunday morning onward. This would be good for someone who is homebound, new to the area, or considering joining Grace Church.

As for Easter, alternate plans are in the works. We are working on some special features that we hope will be a blessing to you and yours and helpful as you reach out to unbelievers.

Please be praying for the body at this time as well as all those affected by the current pandemic. This is the time for Christians to step up and show the love of Christ even more intently than usual. People are so open to having conversations.

I am praying for you and I am so thankful for you.

In Christ,

Mike

P.S. According to Ecclesiastes 1:12-18, man’s wisdom fails. Trust the faithful Word! #LivingInLightofDying (Remember, Ecclesiastes is about how believers should live in light of their inevitable deaths. Redeem the time for Jesus and the Gospel!)

'20-'21 BUDGET FINAL VOTE

Grace Church Family,

We are happy to report that the online voting to confirm the 2020-2021 budget was successful. We recorded 90 ballots returned, which is in line with the number of ballots collected for each of the last several years. The 2020-2021 proposed budget passed overwhelmingly.

Thank you for your generous and joyful support with prayer, finances, time and effort for the work GCO is involved in, both on our campus, in the local community, and throughout the world.

March 27, 2020

Grace Church Family,

As I sit here contemplating life and ministry and Grace Church of Orange, I am very thankful for you and your partnership in the Gospel. Apart from Jesus we can do nothing, but we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!

Little did any of us know at the turn of the year we would be living in such tumultuous, confusing, complicated times. We always live with the unseen killer sin, now our awareness is heightened of unseen killer viruses, also always present.

We do not live in fear, we walk by faith. There is no one I would rather be walking through this with than you. How often do we remind ourselves God has put us here for such a time as this? Now is one such time. And by God’s grace there will be many more.

Just want to give you some encouragement. God is in control. We cannot figure everything out. We have His wisdom in the Word and He is leading, guiding, protecting, providing, moment by moment, empowering and enabling us to do His will. Praise God.

Praying for you and yours, and for all God’s flock,

Mike

PROPOSED '20-'21 BUDGET

Our budget year runs April 1-March 31. Our new fiscal year begins Wednesday April 1, 2020. We have distributed a proposed budget and have held our annual Budget Q&A, except this year we did it all online.

Voting to confirm the proposed budget will be online also. Our Bylaws allow members over 18 to vote on the budget. This Saturday a google forms link will be emailed to members over 18. We are asking members to respond and submit their ballots online by Sunday evening at 5:00

Grace Church, thank you for everything you are doing to keep Gospel ministry flourishing through your generous giving in these uncertain and challenging times.

March 26, 2020

Grace Church Family,

We have so many questions right now. How can I figure this current crisis out? How do I make sense of all the information coming my way? Where do I find truth in times like this? And the granddaddy of them all: What is the meaning of life?

In this crazy, mixed-up world, where do we find truth, comfort, and direction? Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 begins a larger section (1:12-2:26) regarding looking for satisfaction in all the wrong places. It points us to the answer.

We see Solomon tell autobiographically how he went to the world to seek his wisdom. A man who had been endowed by God with so much wisdom, temporarily wandered and left God out of the picture. We can relate, can’t we?

We find ourselves easily trying to figure it all out in our own understanding. We get swept up as opinions sweep across the spectrum. It’s tough to figure out what the biblical answers are. This is where worldview becomes crucial.

Get ready for a one-two punch, building from Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 (We are not in control!) to Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 (We cannot figure this out!). It leaves you wondering, “Where do I go then? What do I do?” Get ready for the answer on Sunday.

Resting in Christ alone,

Mike

March 25, 2020

Grace Church Family,

We are living pretty remote lives right now. It is really an interesting time. I believe that God is blessing his people immensely in the midst. We have to be even more flexible as the current situation is so fluid. We’ve got to stay centered and grounded in Christ and Scripture. During this time God is really impressing upon my heart the things that are most important. I’m sure He is doing the same for you as well. Even though nerves can easily be frazzled in close quarters and schedules have been turned upside down, God meets us in every situation. This is the believer’s hope, “Christ in you the hope of glory” (Col. 1:27). We love you Grace Orange, we are praying for you, and we can’t wait until we can meet again.

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike

P.S. Check out the attached video, for a GCO update and some time in the Word.

March 24, 2020

Grace Church Family,

Truth for Today: Jesus Sustains Everything

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” ‭‭(Hebrews‬ ‭1:3‬)

Do you wonder, especially right now, who is holding everything together and keeping everything going? Hebrews 1:3 gives us the astounding, soul-strengthening answer: It is Jesus. Let’s break this verse down.

God the Son is “the radiance of the glory of God”.  “Radiance” refers to emitting brightness, the Shekinah glory of God radiated from Him. Not a reflection of glory, the actual glory. He is the source. “Glory” is the brilliant radiance from God. The outflow of His being. “God” refers to His absolute, timeless existence. “Exact imprint” means an impression or stamp, refers to engraving a character or mark made by a die or seal. This indicates the characteristic trait or distinctive mark of God.

All that to say, Jesus Christ is God Almighty. Then, we see “He upholds the universe by the word of his power.” Focus with me on that idea.

Jesus upholds the universe. He holds every molecule, atom, and element together.‬‬ “Upholds” means to carry. The Son’s work of upholding involves not only support, but also movement. He carries all things forward on their appointed course. Jesus is not just holding everything up, being all-powerful, but He keeps everything moving along, being all-knowing and all-present. This points to His pervasive, precise, providential orchestration of all things as our sovereign God.

All of this is of immense comfort in these moments of uncertainty, fear, and anxiety. This is truth to calm all fears. This is comforting strength for you as you trust Christ’s all-sufficient sacrifice for sin and humbly yield yourself to Him.

Staffing Update

Whenever a staff member leaves, it’s our common practice to stop and consider whether the church’s changing needs would be better addressed by modifying our staff structure. Kelly Gallagher’s move to Georgia last fall created such an opportunity. And so, it is that we’re announcing the creation of an Executive Pastor role.

This may sound like a new name for the old position, but despite some overlap the job descriptions are quite different.  The Executive Pastor is elder-qualified and responsible for creating strategies and processes that align church operations with the vision established by the Elders. The Administrator/Office Manager was a task-focused role under the direction of the pastoral staff.

As we grow, we anticipate the likelihood of filling the Administrator/Office Manager position in the future, at which time it would report to the Executive Pastor. But at this time, we can’t justify filling both positions.

Following Kelly’s departure, one of elders, Bryan Bush, stepped in to provide oversight of church operations on an interim basis. The skill he brought into this role was part of what opened our eyes to the potential value of a higher-level role. We’re pleased to announce that Bryan has agreed to officially take on this new position effective April 1, 2020.  Join us in welcoming Bryan and thanking him for his willingness to serve!

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Pastor Mike for all the Elders

A NOTE FROM PASTOR MIKE

Grace Church Family,

Yesterday was so surreal, meeting via live stream once again. It was sweet to see so many of the comments and reactions. Thank you for interacting so well. What a great group of people Grace Church is. I saw pictures from families as they interacted at home. So awesome to see you gathering together around the Word. God is so good to us. Even in times like this.

Here’s a brief sermon recap from yesterday’s preaching from Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 “We Are Not In Control!”

- We are not in control of life (1:4), the world (1:5-7), or outcomes (1:8-11).
- But there are things that God expects Christians, in his strength, to control.

I shared 9 of them from Ecclesiastes yesterday:

  1. Your desires. (2:1-9)
  2. Your use of time. (3:1-8; 11:6)
  3. Your words, to God and others. (5:1-2; 9:17; 10:12)
  4. Your use of money. (5:10, 13)
  5. Your heart. (7:21-22)
  6. Your family time. (9:9)
  7. Your wisdom. (10:1-3)
  8. Your doing of good. (8:3, 5, 12; 11:1-2)
  9. Your godliness. (12:1, 13-14)

- We are not in control but we trust the sovereign God who is.
- You are not in control. Yield to Christ and control yourself.

Here are some sermon follow-up questions that you can go through with your household.

We love you and we are praying for you,

Mike

March 20, 2020

What do we do as a church during a time of necessary absence from one another?

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:19-25

We are in an emergency time. Our gatherings have by necessity been halted. Everyone in our society has been affected. What does that mean for us as a church? Especially because we are in the habit of gathering often in obedience to God to pray, to hear the Word preached, to encourage one another, and to go out in mission to the world.

For a time, in a crisis, the church has often been scattered. We are being scattered right now out of necessity. Keep up family worship at home. Be in the Word and prayer on a daily basis. Gather for the GCO Sunday livestream. Stay together with those in your household and do the Christian life together. This is a unique opportunity. A unique opportunity to do some things that our busy schedules often take us away from. And as soon as possible we will come together as a church.

For the time being, pray fervently, preach the Gospel to your own heart and those you come in contact with, and love whatever people you are nearby. As soon as it is physically possible, we will come back together joyfully.

We love you Grace Church and we are so thankful for each one of you. We are praying for you, praying for everyone in the world, praying that the love of Christ would be shown, and that the Gospel will go out clear and strong during this time.
