Daily Updates

May 29, 2020

Grace Church Family,

We are looking forward to being back together in-person on June 7! Excitement is building as we prepare to re-gather. An announcement is attached as well as some important info that gives specific details and guidelines. More to come! Lots of work to do!

Speaking of work, this Sunday, I’ll be preaching on “Remembering God in Your Work” (Eccl. 2:18–23). Work is a gift from God. It was meant to be worship, but because of man’s sin, it became weariness. In redemption, that worship can be restored.

We are to work as unto the Lord. But there is a troubling aspect of work that must be taken into account. You will work hard. You will leave the rewards to someone else. They may not be as wise as you. True in Solomon’s case.

We need to look at the realistic end result of what we do, and put it in perspective, which is what Ecclesiastes 2:18-23 does. As you pray in prep for Sunday’s sermon, consider: What impact should this knowledge have on your daily pursuits?

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike

P.S. Here is the announcement regarding 5/31 and 6/7 and here are some ways you can help on June 7th!

May 28, 2020

Grace Church Family,

What a difference a day makes! Doesn’t it feel like things are constantly changing during the coronavirus crisis? More than ever, momentary schedule amendments are the new normal, even as we primarily shelter-in-place. It calls for great flexibility and patience.

In yesterday’s daily update, I mentioned that I planned to preach Hebrews 10:24-25 on Sunday, regarding “Who We Are” as believers. I changed my mind. Instead, I’ll be preaching Ecclesiastes 2:18–23, regarding “Remembering God in Your Work”.

Why? Last night, we decided to livestream only this Sunday, May 31, and begin meeting in person on June 7. Then I will begin a 3-week series “Who We Are & Why We Gather”. What the Bible says about the church will be the perfect focus as we reengage gathering.

See the attached video for more information and a timely update. More details to come as plans get solidified. We are so excited to see everyone again!

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike

May 27, 2020

Grace Church Family,

When someone asks you who you are, your first inclination is to give your name, then maybe something about your family, then possibly what you do in life, then maybe where you live. You are stating what would be obvious to someone who observes you regularly. You describe who you are based on your name, family, where you live, and what you do.

The same is true about our identity as the church. Every true believer is part of the universal body of Christ. We belong to Christ, we carry His name, we are part of His family, and we are to serve His purposes to the ends of the earth. And, the Bible makes it very clear that every believer should be a part of a local assembly of Christians, for worship, instruction in the Word, fellowship, and more.

This coming Sunday, I’ll be preaching Hebrews 10:24-25, and the idea of Who We Are as believers and why we gather together.

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike

May 26. 2020

Grace Church Family,

The clouds seem to be parting and a time to meet again seems to be close in sight! We are hard at work and making plans, and as you can guess, there are many moving parts, and multiple variables to consider. Pray for our team as we seek to be wise stewards and servant leaders. We care about your well-being. All of our decisions will be with the good of the entire flock in mind.

Above all we care about your eternal soul and your spiritual growth in Christ. We are praying for you and doing all we can to provide you solid Biblical food during this time. We remain committed to handling the Word of God accurately and having that formulate and inform our beliefs as well as our practices. We will be in touch more as the week progresses.

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike

May 22, 2020

Grace Church Family,

Currently, we are all dealing with disappointment to one degree or another. COVID-19 has disrupted our lives. Dashed many desires. Even led many to feelings of despair. Missed births, deaths, and milestones can do that to you.

One disappointment after another. You’re hoping for one thing, you’re planning for one thing, sometimes for years, and suddenly, you are not able to do that thing. Canceled. Postponed. On hold. Furloughed. Temporarily closed. Missed.

Our grandson Ezra’s first birthday party? Canceled. Our middle child Ariana’s college graduation? Postponed. Missions trip canceled prior to COVID-19? It would’ve been canceled if we’d continued our plans. I officiated a wedding with seven people. The list goes on.

How have you navigated this current crisis? What perspective has carried you through? How many times have you needed to be re-focused on what is truly important? How have your priorities changed or been sharpened? How are you dealing with disappointment?

On Sunday we will be back in Ecclesiastes (specifically Ecc. 2:17) and have the opportunity to benefit from the wisdom Solomon gained through some of the disappointments he faced. My prayer is that we will listen and learn.

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike

May 21, 2020

Grace Church Family,

Missed birthday parties. Postponed weddings. Canceled graduations. Virtual funerals. Work furloughs. Many disruptions. Some lash out, many re-evaluate priorities.

You are not alone. Drive-by love and hugs don’t cut it. Shelter-in-place has put a damper on life. Overreaction and overreach in many spheres just complicates matters.

What’s your biggest disappointment during the coronavirus pandemic?

How do you deal with the disturbance?

Who do you process your burdens with?

How do you see God’s sovereign hand over this for good?

How can I pray for you?

I care and I’d like to know. Email me your answers at msciarra@graceorange.org.

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike

May 20, 2020

Grace Church Family,

Has this coronavirus pandemic caused you to miss your brothers and sisters in Christ greatly? You are not alone. Has shelter-in-place caused you to rethink and revisit what it means to be a part of a local church? You’re not alone. Has relative isolation made you wonder about your commitment level and your resolve to be a committed and engaged member of Grace Church? You’re not alone.

I firmly believe God has been using this time providentially to soften our hearts and to make us yearn to be back together. I’m hearing daily from people who are a part of Grace that can’t wait to reunite.  I can’t wait to see what ministry God does in us and through us for His glory that we may never have been prepared for otherwise unless we had gone through this time.

Yes, God is providentially orchestrating our lives right now.  I am excited about what He’s doing. I am thankful for each of you and your part in the worldwide body of Christ and in the local body of believers known as Grace Church of Orange. Thanks for your sacrificial service. God is at work in you to will and do His good pleasure, in every place and time you find ourself.

For Jesus and the Gospel,

Mike
