A Veteran’s Day Observation
Today is Veteran’s Day. It is a day where we remember those who served, and even gave their lives, in the service of our country’s freedom.
In 1921, an unknown American soldier from World War I was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This spot overlooking the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., jumpstarted our annual remembrance of America’s veterans.
In England and France, an unknown soldier was buried (Westminster Abbey and the Arc de Triomphe) on November 11, recognizing the end of World War I at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). It was known as “Armistice Day.” Fighting ceased, war was over. All hoped that World War I, “the War to end all wars,” would be the last. Alas, wars and rumors of wars persist.
And yet there is a greater war, going on in the unseen realm, spilling over into the world of men, for the souls of men, women, boys, and girls. The enemy is Satan and the victory has already been assured at the cross, and empty tomb, and yet still many languish in lostness, groping through the spiritual darkness.
So on this Veterans Day 2022, I encourage every believer to remember our American veterans and also commit ourselves once again to the service of the King of kings and Lord of lords, seeking to reach others with the life-saving and peace-giving gospel of Jesus Christ.
