Convictions, Conscience, and Christian Liberty

June 12, 2011 Speaker: Mark Holbrook Series: Elders

Topic: Elders Passage: Romans 14:1–23

Convictions, Conscience, and Christian Liberty (Romans 14)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Romans 14:1-4 warns against judging others for their choices based on their convictions. What kinds of choices do you think the Apostle Paul had in mind? How is this kind of judging different than discerning disobedience to God?
  2. Read the rest of Romans 14. What are some choices others have made or are making that you are tempted to inappropriately judge? Why?
  3. When can the exercise of our Christian liberty (choices we are fully convinced are acceptable to God) cause a fellow believer to stumble (sin)? See verses 21-23.
  4. How far does our obligation to forsake a Christian liberty extend? Immediate family? Friends? Anyone in the church? Anyone we meet?
  5. What does it mean to be “fully convinced” of the acceptability of a particular behavior choice that is not prohibited by scripture?
