The Unknown God

"For as I was passing through and considering your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you ignorantly worship without knowing Him, I proclaim to you." Acts 17:23 KJV

Seeing that Paul's life was in jeopardy at Berea, his companions sent him by ship to Athens. While waiting for Silas and Timothy to join him, he toured the city taking note of the many gods the Athenians worshipped. The elite philosophers of that day confronted him, made a citizen's arrest, and asked him to defend his teaching about Jesus and the resurrection. Paul in his response calls attention to the prominent inscription that characterized their sincere but false worship and tells them that the unknowable God can be known. Jesus said "No one comes to the Father, but by Me." Faith must not only have an object; it must be living and powerful so as to be able to respond. We too must make known the true and living God.
