Paying the Debt We Owe Romans 13:8-14

September 15, 2019 Speaker: Mike Sciarra Series: Romans

Topic: Romans Passage: Romans 13:8–14

Discussion Questions:

  1. If we are to owe nothing to anyone but love, what does that have to do with regard to having a car or home loan? (Ex. 22:25; Lev. 25:35–37; Deut. 15:7–9; Neh. 5:7; Ps. 15:5; 37:21, 26; Ezek. 22:12; Matt. 5:42; Luke 6:34; Paying debts when due: Deut. 23:19, 20; 24:10–13.)
  2. What does all the talk about waking up, putting on, and casting off have to do with following Jesus and relating to others?
  3. What promises do the Scriptures give for the one that pays their obligation of love?
  4. What prohibitions are in place in this passage for the one who wants to please God?
  5. What does it mean to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” and how do we stop making provision (planning out ways) to gratify our fleshly desires? Can we still enjoy a good burger or sushi or pizza with anchovies? (Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10; Gal. 3:27)
  6. How do we enjoy God’s good gifts of Grace without making them into idols? How do we fix our minds on the Spirit and the Word and live aligned with God (1 John 5:21; Rom. 8:3–5, 8–9, 12–13)
