David here is instructing his listener's based on his own experience in following God's instructions. He passed on what God had taught him in many troublesome times, having to flee for his life from King Saul, who hated David with a vengeance and chased him like a partridge through the Judean hills trying to kill him. David was also betrayed by one of his trusted counselors and then further humiliated when his throne was usurped by his youngest son Absalom. David taught the way his followers should go, not the way they wanted to go. He watched his men closely to see if they were faithfully applying the truths he had taught them. God also is watching over us, His children, to see that we are "Doers of the Word and not hearers only."
