Losing Asses To Find A King

"And the asses of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, "Please take one of the servants with you. And arise, go look for the donkeys." 1 Sam. 9:3; “So when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, “This is the man of whom I spoke to you. This one shall reign over My people.’" 1 Sam. 9:17

In those times, loss of donkeys was a loss of wealth. So it was imperative they be found. Saul is sent by his father on the difficult mission to find them. In searching for the donkeys, they seek out and consult with "the man of God" who happens to be Samuel the prophet. God had already revealed to Samuel who should be the first king of Israel. The lost donkeys were God's means of bringing Saul into contact with Samuel, who tells him, "You are the man" to be King. Overwhelmed by this news, Saul was missing, and like the donkeys, had to be searched for. He too was found, having hidden himself in the armory. When God chooses us for a task, it's fruitless to try and hide.
