"Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of The Lord shall prosper in his hand." Isaiah 53:10

We would have nixed the cross. We would have chosen a less painful, less bloody, more comfortable way. But it was the will of the Father to crush Jesus. He did it for all who would believe. It is a wonder of grace that those who believe in Jesus do not perish, but thrive in Christ.
