The Use Of Christian Liberty

"But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours becomes a stumbling block to those who are weak. But when you thus sin against the brother, and his weak conscience, you sin against Christ." 1 Cor. 8, 12 NKJ

Christian liberty is not the freedom to do anything we want to do, but freedom to do what we ought to do. The issue before us was meat that had been earlier sacrificed to idols made its way into the local meat market and being sold to the public. Many in the church at Corinth saw no problem in eating it, while others thought it to be a sin because it had previously been offered to idols. Paul clearly states it is a sin to use one's liberty to offend the honest convictions of a weaker brother. Love triumphs when we deny exercising our liberty in order not to offend others or cause them to stumble.
