What Can't Be Done

"It is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." Jer. 10:23

Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet, echoes this truth in his poem "To a Mouse”, writing, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray." It is best to expect the unexpected because the God of heaven superimposes His perfect plan over man's best, but flawed, human effort to direct his own life. Understanding you can't do it alone is the first step in allowing God to do it. Does this mean we should make no plans and set no goals for our lives? Of course not! However, we must accept the fact that it is not within our DNA, inherent ability, or skill-set to plan or direct our own lives. In order to fulfill God's plan for our lives we must acknowledge He has such a plan, submit to it, and watch Him direct our decision making accordingly. Our plans should be written in pencil, God's are penned with indelible ink.
